dc.description.abstractA pesar de la importancia del boniato en el mundo, el origen, evolución, y distribución geográfica siguen siendo tema de debate entre los investigadores de diferentes países. El objetivo del presente trabajo es reconstruir y dilucidar aspectos importantes en la historia de este cultivo, así como ayudar a definir criterios en la comprensión del conocimiento acumulado. Los restos más antiguos de boniato son datados de 8080 ±170 a.n.e., descubiertos en cuevas del cañón de Chilca en la zona sur-central de Perú. Todo demuestra que el boniato pudo haber evolucionado por separado en América Central (incluido el Caribe) y América del Sur (Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador y Perú). Aún no está esclarecido si el origen genético del boniato fue por autopoliploidización o alopoliploidización, ya que hay fuertes evidencias sobre ambas teorías, aunque los últimos estudios indican que el evolucionó a partir de al menos dos eventos distintos de autopoliploidización en poblaciones silvestres polimórficas de una única especie progenitora. “La Hipótesis Tripartita” y sobre todo la línea kumara son reales y su existencia cuenta con un fuerte apoyo genético.spa
