Abstract
Actualmente la creciente eutrofización de los sistemas acuáticos por efecto del incremento de la población, agricultura, minería y aporte de nutrientes por procesos asociados a la acuicultura, se han convertido en un fenómeno frecuente en lagos y reservorios, en muchas partes del mundo. Cuando los sistemas se tornan eutróficos, la diversidad del fitoplancton disminuye, conduciendo a que prevalezcan poblaciones dominantes de cianobacterias, sobre todo en áreas con altas temperaturas, condiciones de luz-energía constante y pH alto. El desarrollo masivo de cianobacterias, capaces de producir potentes toxinas, genera graves repercusiones en la salud pública, ecología acuática y sanidad animal. Las cianotoxinas se bioacumulan en invertebrados y vertebrados acuáticos, principalmente en el zooplancton y en el hígado de peces, lo que implica que hay un considerable potencial para que los efectos tóxicos se magnifiquen en la red trófica.
