Abstract
El riego de la caña de azúcar es una práctica rutinaria en el valle geográfico del
río Cauca y cerca del 95% del área cultivada recibe riego suplementario. En la
región, la precipitación anual varía entre 800 y 2600 mm y su promedio es de
1000 mm. Durante el año se presentan dos períodos de lluvias que comprenden
desde marzo hasta mayo y desde octubre hasta noviembre. La topografía es plana,
con pendientes inferiores a 1.5%. Durante los últimos años, el área cultivada con
caña se ha incrementado en más de 20,000 ha y en la actualidad se estima que
existen 185,000 ha de este cultivo. Este aumento en el área cultivada ha hecho
que el cultivo se desplace hacia zonas de piedemonte de la Cordillera Central y a
regiones con pendientes limitantes para la aplicación de riego por gravedad o
aspersión.
La disponibilidad de agua para riego ha disminuido en forma notable durante
los últimos años, debido a cambios en la cantidad y en la frecuencia de las lluvias,
ocasionados por la tala incontrolada de los bosques en las cuencas hidrográficas
y por la explotación excesiva de los acuíferos superficiales. En años con precipitación
normal, es común encontrar niveles freáticos superficiales con agua de
buena calidad que pueden suministrar entre 40% y 50% de los requerimientos del
cultivo. Por consiguiente, es importante manejar estos niveles como una fuente
de agua para subirrigación.
