| spa |
dc.description.abstract | A survey of cowpea diseases was conducted by the Colombian Institute of Agriculture, ICA, at different locations in the Caribean Region of Colombia. Several fungal diseases were found widespread throughout the region: Seedling mortality or damping-off (Pythiwn, Sclerotiu,n, Rhizoctonia), fusarium wilt (Fusariun ox'sporwn f. sp. Tracheiphilurn), cercospora leaf spot (Gercospora cruenta), ring-spot (Gorynespora cassiicola), and anthracnose (Colletorrichwn deinatiwn. Other fungal diseases are less common; stem rot (Pythiu?n aphaniderrnatwn), Scierotiwn root rot (Scierotiwn rolfsii), and web blight (Thanarephorus cucwneris. A bacterial disease was detected: the bacterial blight (Xantho, nonas vignicola). Two viral diseases, the cowpea mosaic (CSMV) and the cowpea golden mosaic virus (CGMV), were found in all areas. These viruses are easily spread by common cowpea insect pests. Control measures for damping-off include fungicide seed treatment and avoidance of low, wet soils. Resistant varieties are the most desirable method to control fusarium wilt. Seed treatment with benomyl (3 gr Benlate/kg of seed) is an effective method for anthracnose control. Finally, appropriate insect control measures are syggested to reduce the incidance of cowpea mosaic virus (CSMV) and cowpea golden mosaic virus (CGMV). | eng |
